Join us for the 2022 Donald C. Brace Lecture, presented by Maria A. Pallante and her lecture,
"The Art and Innovation of Exclusive Rights."
Maria A. Pallante is the President and CEO of the Association of American Publishers, where she leads the public policy priorities of book, education, and research journal publishers in the United States with respect to copyright, technology, and free expression.
From 2011 to 2016, Maria served as Register of Copyrights and Director of the U.S. Copyright Office during an extremely active period of policy analysis. She advised and helped commence the first comprehensive review of the Copyright Act by Congress in decades, testifying on emerging issues and producing major studies on Copyright Small Claims; Copyright and the Music Marketplace; and The Making Available Right; as well as the Copyright Office Fair Use Index. Among other initiatives, she established the Barbara A. Ringer Honors Fellowship program, and produced a complete overhaul of the Compendium of U.S. Copyright Office Practices, making it widely available for the first time as a living digital publication for staff, practitioners, and the courts. From 2009-2011, she served as Associate Register for Policy and International Affairs, and from 2007-2009, as the Copyright Office’s Deputy General Counsel.
Earlier in her career, Maria served for eight years as intellectual property counsel for with the Guggenheim Museums and Foundation, New York, where she advised on governance, exhibitions, publishing, and branding, and directed the global licensing program for the institution’s famous name, buildings, and contemporary art collections. She began her career in private practice and as a staff attorney with the Authors Guild.
A former Trustee of the Copyright Society, Maria currently serves on the American Bar Association’s Copyright Task Force; the Advisory Board of the Center for Intellectual Property x Innovation Policy (C-IP2) at Scalia Law School; and the Americana Music Association Foundation Board. She is a graduate of the George Washington University Law School

ABOUT THE LECTURE:
The Donald C. Brace Memorial Lecture is given in memory of the publisher Donald C. Brace, who founded Harcourt, Brace & Co. in 1919. Apart from his interest in the art of literature, Donald Brace was deeply interested in copyright legislation, the protection of creative talent, and freedom of the press. In 1950, he was awarded the Columbia University Medal of Excellence in recognition of his distinguished contributions to publishing. This series was originally established by a gift from his daughter, Mrs. Donna Brace Ogilvie.
